Arc System Works and Drecom have released the tactical RPG DEMONS' NIGHT FEVER on Steam. The game is led by Sohei Niikawa, creator of the *Disgaea* series, who came up with the original concept and wrote the story. Character designs are by Yūji Himukai.
The story follows Giga Super Death, supreme ruler of the demons. Just as he's about to defeat God, he suddenly loses all his power and is reduced to a helpless baby. To regain his former strength through a resurrection ritual, the dark lord teams up with Killshiro Katakana, a burnt-out office worker who's lost his will to live.
Combat revolves around the Peon Exploitation System, where players sacrifice allies and blow up their own units on the battlefield grid to deal as much damage as possible.
The game's first hours on sale brought a wave of criticism, with its initial SteamDB rating falling to 47.22%. Much of the backlash has focused on the Western localization. Players have called out its heavy use of out-of-place internet slang and English-language memes, including "booba," "unalive," "mathmogg," "killmaxx," and "lone wolf alpha." The translated dialogue is packed with slang that wasn't in the original Japanese script.
"There's something really off-putting about the English translation. Listening to the Japanese voices makes it obvious the localization team took far too many liberties-it's downright eye-roll-inducing. Memes this bad will be stale in just a few months, once..."
